Installing and Configuring FreePPP

To be able to dialup into CSD's terminal servers using PPP, you will need PPP software such as FreePPP. PPP is a serial protocol that enables you to run TCP/IP, which is the standard protocol used by all internet programs. FreePPP requires that you have a 68020-40 or PowerPC processor and System 7.1 or newer.

  1. Run the Internet Setup Monkey (Install FreePPP) program.
  2. Pick easy install, unless you just want to install a particular component.

When the installer is finished, you should restart your computer. You should then notice a pull-down telephone icon near the upper-right hand corner of your screen, this is the FreePPP menu. FreePPP will also install some files in a folder on your hard disk, and a control strip module.

  3. Select Open FreePPP Setup from the pull-down menu. If necessary, click the triangle in the lower-left hand corner of the setup window to bring up PPP settings.
  4. You should see a checkbox labelled "Check line every X seconds" or "Check line state when connected" - Make sure that this is Unchecked!.
  5. If you're using FreePPP 2.6 or higher, see step 5a. If you're using an older version, see step 5b. We package version 2.6.2 on our diskettes.
5a. Select the Accounts tab and click New. (Click for image.) Fill in the following fields:

      Password: Your CSD Password
Next, select the Dialup tab. (Click for image.) Put 303 as the area code, and 583-3000 (for 56k) or 413-1074 (for 33.6) for the phone number. Make sure that "Dial area code" is checked. Then hit OK.
Your main FreePPP screen should now look something like this.

5b. Select the Locations tab. (Click for image.) Put 303 as the area code, the rest is optional. Click OK. Next, select the Accounts tab and click New. (Click for image.) Fill in the following fields:
      Account name: CSD 56k
      Phone number: 583-3000 (for 56k) or 413-1074 (for 33.6)
      Connect: Directly
User name: Your CSD Username (Login ID)
      Password: Your CSD Password
Also make sure that the "Dial area code" checkbox is checked.
Your main FreePPP screen should now look something like this.

That's it! Your FreePPP is now configured. If you haven't set up your TCP/IP settings yet:

Installing and Configuring MacTCP - for systems running 7.5 or below.
Configuring OpenTransport - for systems running 7.5.3 or higher.
